The Conjuring 2 is a supernatural horror film from director James Wan. Starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga alongside, Frances O'Connor, Madison Wolfe, Simon McBurney and Franka Potente. Although it has 2 in the title, this entry serves as the third movie in the popular Conjuring series, following 2014’s Annabelle. It’s part of a shared universe that also includes 2018’s The Nun.

Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to London in 1977. Where a dark supernatural force has overtaken the home of a poor young woman, Peggy Hodgson. Peggy has a daughter named Janet that appears to be suffering from a slight case of demonic possession. An exorcism ensues, but that only seems to make things a lot worse. Now our pair of investigators are being targeted by a dark nun and other demonic spirits.

James Wan does an amazing job of presenting the movies in this series. It’s beautiful. He recreates England in the Sixties, and does it with amazing detail. I loved the art direction. The effects were just as good. Very nerve wracking and suspenseful as hell. Even with this stunning creativity behind the scenes, the actual filmmaking is sloppy and amateurish.

While I appreciate what James Wan is doing, there are blatant issues and holes. Scenes have conflicting emotions. Sometimes the supernatural events appear comical and out-of-context. Then others scare the pants off of you. It's just not consistent. I also didn’t care for the egregious exposition in the dialogue. It was literally around every corner. Also, Patrick Wilson is not good in this movie. The other actors seem to be doing just fine. However, Pat appears to be phoning it in. Maybe it's the writing. Either way it’s a shame. Patrick Wilson is a good actor that looks tired of working in this genre.

The Conjuring 2 is a good horror movie. It has flaws, sure. But it’s nothing that can take away from the top-notch storytelling that this series provides. I like that these movies are supposedly inspired by true-life events. It adds to the mystique James Wan catches in these pictures. If you haven’t seen any of these pictures yet, then I would highly recommend seeing them. Fan’s of movies like Insidious and Poltergeist will definitely enjoy this. It’s perfect for the Halloween season.
