Scary Movie 2 is a comedy horror film from the Wayans Brothers. It is a sequel in the hilarious Scary Movie franchise. These movies are satire of topical, late-nineties pop culture, that revolves around the horror genre. There are many cameos from comedians and actors, but its core cast is Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Shawn and Marlon Wayans, from the first film. Chris Masterson, Chris Elliott, Tim Curry and David Cross round out the other major players. Keenen Ivory Wayans is the director. It came out in 2000 when I was a senior in high-school. I couldn’t wait to see this movie after Scary Movie. It was just the tone a high-school kid could enjoy.

Professor (Tim Curry) and his wheelchair-bound assistant, Dwight (David Cross), bring a group of young people to a supposed haunted mansion. They aim to encounter the alleged paranormal phenomena. But what they discover is much stranger. Hugh Kane (Richard Moll), the long deceased, foul-mouthed and perverted owner of the Hell House, want's to inflict havoc and have a little fun.

Like the original Scary Movie, this film is influenced by a single film. Unfortunately, that single film is The Haunting, a forgettable film from 1999. Scary Movie 2 is overstuffed with cliches and parodies. They don’t even have to be related to horror. Some references have no horror influence what-so-ever and are topical specifically for the time. One scene that stands out features a remixed montage of our characters dribbling a basketball, ala a moderately popular commercial from the late nineties. Hilarious, but not at all related to anything creepy or spooky.

The cameos are respectable but not nearly on the level of the original film. This movie has visits from; James Woods, Natasha Lyonne, Andy Richter, James DeBello, Veronica Cartwright, Howard Stern’s Beetlejuice, Vitamin C, Bradley Fisher and Tori Spelling. Spelling was rumored to have had a much larger role in the film, but things had fallen through. Interestingly, she had appeared as a cameo in this film and Scream 2.

The Wayans Brothers had been rushed into finishing and delivering this movie in a year. The studios had wanted it to follow the original. The results are not good. As a whole, Scary Movie 2 is a bad movie. Its most successful quality is the comedy. The supernatural special effects aren’t any prize either.

There are scenes from this movie I am still quoting today. Razzing my co-workers about using my “Strong Hand” and “I’ll be the bigger man and WALK, away.” Scary Movie was far superior. But, if you’ve ever wanted to see Tim Curry deliver dick and fart jokes. Then I recommend this movie. It’s wonderful to watch with friends. Some scenes still leave me in stitches and are hilarious. If you aren’t familiar with the franchise, then I would check out the first film before this.
