Nightworld is a supernatural horror film from 2017. It stars American actors, Jason London and Robert Englund. It was directed by Chilean filmmaker, Patricio Valladares. And it was produced in Bulgaria. A lot of traveling for a less than mediocre flick. I remember thinking it looked like a new Lovecraftian picture. I was excited but wrong. Sure, maybe Nightworld has a slight peppering of entertainment. As a whole, it kinda sucks.
Former LAPD officer, Brett Irlam, moves to Bulgaria after witnessing the brutal suicide of his wife. He gets a job as a night watchman for a weird evil doorway. A strange passage to the unknown, located far below a high-rise apartment building. He is visited by strange beings He is aided by Jacob, a former watchman, who is old and blind. A young woman that works at a local cafe. And his good friend, ... from America.
Nightworld is interesting. I like the idea of guarding a doorway into some evil dimension, but I wanted so much more. This movie is trite. It’s shallow, cheap and full of horrendous cliches. I appreciate how serious Jason London appears to be for this role, but he isn’t very good. Robert Englund is just on cruise control and appears to love working. So at least he has an excuse.
This is a bad movie. Not terrible, passable at a minimum. I could see this having a midnight showing at some cult film festival in Austin, Texas. It’s got the kind of charm only a cult film can have. I didn’t hate the movie, but I probably won't be rewatching it either. It’s not something that I would recommend. If you happen to be having trouble sleeping, this would be a great late-night flick, if you didn’t have something else to watch already.
